Bruce was never very good with using correct terminology. I hope the Evony people are still looking at this public part of the forum and can add the bait and switch accusation to the libel suit.

Are you getting all frustrated because a games marketing feature does not deploy footage/images that are representative of in-game footage/images? I understand that "A pair of tits" is a bit much, but it will get stupid people clicking, and it's not illegal.

Marketing is obviously very important for videogames, especially the 'old' boxed ones. Using artwork and not screenshots to market the game is also fine as you are selling a fantasy. Could you imagine if movieposters had to be actual frames from the film? or back in the 80's when videogames was just 2 colored blocks moving around on the screen, artwork was needed to show what the intention of the game actually was :D
I do think that old-school marketing, with TV-ads and posters all around town is a waste of money today and that quality obviously play a larger role. Games are increasingly sold (or not sold) on word-of-mouth.

The majority of game ads don't show the game, they try to evoke some emotion to get you interested in the game. Most games just don't sell themselves well with a 10 second clip of game footage. Instead, the TV ad is just there to get you interested in finding out more. Good movie posters are the same way.

I love the Fosters ads in England. They portray Australian blokes as clueless chumps who prefer chatting up tall hot blondes so that they shade their beer from the sun. No wonder we never drink it over there or here.

Yeah unfortunately people buy what they know...and what they know is what is given to them. I've recently had one of my games fall short to another game on the app store just because the other publisher had a more recognizable license. Our game is averaging 4.5 stars and theirs is 3.5 yet the license wins out every time :/

A familiar license gets you a leg up, but a solid product will usually win out in the long run.

Oh and the premise of this thread makes me want to shoot puppies. Sure marketing has a place in the industry, but when people start believing that the packaging is more important than the product itself, that's when they start dangerously undermining the industry itself. People will only buy shit for so long, before they just get bored and move on to other pursuits.
