I'm not entirely sure it's automated. We had automated spam flooding the old board, which is one of the reasons we changed the software. I rather suspect this is actual human labour beating the captcha. That said, we could probably improve it with a couple of domain specific questions.

Weird. I thought the only way spam advertising works was because it was practically free to make an email/post, and even though the conversion rates were tiny it still worked out because it was so cheap to spam. How on earth is it economically viable if it costs them 50 cents for a post?

 

I have recently reduced spam on my Harbury and Coventry forums to zero by adding an extra question to the joining process.

I did this years ago to Artforums.co.uk with "what colour is a blackbird" and likewise it reduced spam to zero.
