    I second this!

I met my future wife, had tons of great times that I barely remember, learned a couple things along the way, and overall learned what it is like to live away from home - all at university. Sure you may rack up some debt, but if you don't go you will regret it for the rest of your life. Going back when you are older will NOT be as fun

Errm I did all that by going to work, except the debt thing because I was earning.

It's a rare and lucky man that finds his wife by working in the video game industry, though hopefully that changes in the future.

I daresay that the atmosphere for fostering friendships at university is slightly different than that at work.

Nope. I spent most days drinking and playing pool or Virtua Fighter, whilst working. ;)

Meh - you have your whole life to work - may as well enjoy those 3 years while you can (imho)

I'm a coder. I was way before leaving home for my first full time job.
What could be more enjoyable for a young coder who just left home than getting a job, coding on lots of different platforms and being surrounded by other coders with more experience? :)

I did and do. :) I think more so than I would have had I gone to University because I was earning money and able to spend it to have a good time.

Having a life is not simply about having money. A lot of the life experience of university is because no one has lots of money.

Personally I think you missed out on a great experience. Not saying you didn't have other experiences but university is something special.

Couldn't agree more. University is a very unique time in a young person's life. They are young enough to not have many responsibilities, yet old enough to realize that they soon will, and can have as much fun as they can before the world starts pressing in on them.

Now I'm not saying that you have less fun as you get older. In fact I feel that life only keeps getting better. But I must say I am very happy to have experienced that short period of awesomeness.

Hell, I fucked up, dropped out, and got no qualifications out of the whole deal, but I'm still glad I went. Sure I could have done it better, but it was worth it.

I too went to university. However, I kinda want all the ass holes to slowly die of cancer. You know, the ones who spent university "having fun" at the fucking expense of those of us who had to work full time while going to school full time.

...and I hope a wolf chews the arm off their corpse and happily parades it around to their children.

...and then their children grow up to work for me so I can fire them.

Holding on to that shit will shorten your life.

I realised very quickly that university was useless for me. I realised that my life experiences in uni wouldn't be what I wanted if I stayed. So I decided to cancel my courses and get a job. Looking back a lot if time and money was wasted preparing for something which I didn't use. I only started having the life I wanted after I decided to leave.

What about the ones that worked part-time, still had a shit-ton of "having fun", and are now working their asses off to pay for the loans they took out to pay for all that fun (and schooling)? :)

    Totally. Worth it.

My parents are poor, I funded myself through university. Didnt stop me having fun though.

My summer holidays consisted of getting up at 6am, doing a data entry job, finishing a 3pm, doing another data entry job until 8pm, then heading to a nightclub to work until 2am behind the bar. My saturdays and sundays were spent working in the local pub as a bar man all day.

So i didnt have a single day off during my summer holidays - but it allowed me to have fun during term time.

During term time i'd do the odd job here and there to make extra beer money - be it djing or helping out behind the bar on a busy night, etc.

    - and dont see how me having fun would've been at your expense.

Hmm. I had to work full time while also going to school full time. It wasn't the brightest point in my life, that's for damn sure. Guess it put some hair on my chest, but even Batman has a Nair-smooth body these days, so that might not have helped much.

At any rate, this thread is pretty old, but I'd say definitely go for the CS degree. A game degree will only provide you with one advantage over it, which would be a list of contacts who'll be out in the industry one day. It's true that this is somewhat invaluable, but if you do a good job in college, you should be able to land a job on your own anyway.

Also, beware any for-profit institutions. They're just glorified diploma factories. Even more so than traditional universities.

I was just talking about loud-ass and obnoxious neighbors during school.
