If we were to add an RSS feed to the site that posted news stories to a forum, would you want the posts to go into the current News forum, or in a separate forum?

The feed could generate a lot of posts a day, possibly even more than Game99 :-)

SAME! Please! Not another forum!

RSS Feed = Game99 is finished :!: Hoorah some would say....

Maybe you should start a poll question. See if people want a RSS Feed.

Questions:

What if the RSS Feed misses an article that you would want to see posted? Can you add articles? Will the forum only allow RSS articles? If allowed to post articles wouldn't that increase the chance of articles being repeated? What news sites will the RSS come from?

My brain is starting to hurt so I will stop. Carry on....

Agree with the shanks - we definitely don't need another forum.

Seconded.
This place is getting too cluttered up.

Can't we just have an RSS feed for all the posts on TCE? I know the "messages since last visit thing" is there but it's a pain in the arse to filter through some of the mistakes it makes.

...and an unfiltered RSS feed of other sites is going to help that?

Well, the only reason I'm considering this is because a while ago people said they wanted a RSS feed for the site.

It sounds like that's not the case anymore?

I don't mind either way :-) Do we even want this anymore?

But did they mean an RSS feed of the site, or a forum filled by an RSS feed into the site?

The former could be usefull, the latter, as far as I'm concerned, is completely pointless.

Yes; of the site.

Yes, that's right. We'd love to see an RSS of this site so we can easily see what new posts there have been without having to come here and check explicitely.

I'd *love* an RSS feed from this site.

That lobotomy went through then? Nice to see you can still get that on the NHS.

Twit.

Oh, and yes, an RSS feed OF the site is what we want, you know, a constant stream of TCE goodness to a window near you? With a nice tidy link to it's thread? All secure, of course.

Can anyone recommend an RSS viewer then? There is one built-in Opera 8 but it seems quite clunky.

If you're into newsgroups and already have a good newsreader setup, nntprss is the best thing since sliced bread (http://www.methodize.org/nntprss/).

I tried newsgator (http://www.newsgator.com/ngs/default.aspx) for a while since it integrated with outlook - quite liked it. looking at their website they seem to be doing some web based freebie thing now, too (the outlook version is $15)

What is RSS?
In the happy perfect world of our dreams, it means that all those websites you go and check for news and articles and comics and stuff every morning, they all have an RSS feed, so instead of you needing to traipse through a couple of dozen different sites, your RSS aggregator program goes and grabs them for you and presents them all to you in a single list/treeview/whatever.

I like it because I've got a few feeds that I download to my handjob every morning and read on the train on the way in to work.

Going to work has never been such fun......

Meh, I remember getting the train into central london, squished up between either a fat sweaty bloke, or an attractive young woman and feeling like I was the fat sweaty bloke :/ Dont think there would have been room for handjobs.

OK, to go back to the original topic, here's exactly what you need, Chaos: http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=144548

Any chance of getting that installed? <nudge, nudge> ;-)

Not a chance I'm afraid. RSS doesn't have any knd of security validation. This mod certainly doesn't include any security for the private forums. Anyone can receive and view the feed.

Damn, you're right. I hadn't thought of that.

Anybody knows of a way to have a secure RSS feed? Maybe stick it somewhere that requires entering a username/password to get to it. But then I wonder if RSS-readers are even prepared to deal with that. I know mine isn't :-(

Blah. That's too bad.

I did a quick search on secure RSS and found this (http://labs.silverorange.com/archives/2003/july/privaterss). I tested my reader (Thunderbird) and it worked with both SSL and HTTPS.

Sorry for the delay, I missed the thread... no RSS you see...
